About the project

Innovative surface treatments with a reduced risk of infection transmission

Registration number CZ.01.01.01/01/22_002/0000322

The project is a research and development initiative focused on developing new protective surface treatments that reduce the risk of infection transmission via frequently touched surfaces. The aim is to create effective and health-safe surface treatments suitable for both public and private spaces, to minimise the use of aggressive chemicals and to reduce the environmental burden.

The project focuses on the development and application of hygienic surface treatments for various materials, including glass, stainless steel and plastics, using special photocatalytically active coatings that form a preventive protective layer against the deposition of organic micro-pollutants. At the same time, the project develops photocatalytic additives that can be incorporated into paints and textiles, increasing hygienic safety not only for hard surfaces but also for materials used in interiors and public spaces with a high frequency of contact.

LOTUS Foil

User information and instructions for use

Description

LOTUS Foil is a transparent self-cleaning film intended primarily for touch screens. Its technology helps to continuously reduce the number of micro-organisms on the display surface and thus contributes to more hygienic use.

How it works

LOTUS Foil uses light-activated technology. When natural or artificial light strikes the surface of the film, the LOTUS technology is activated and reactive oxygen species are formed. These continuously act against the micro-organisms present on the surface of the film.

Verified tests and effectiveness

  • Antiviral effectiveness — Institute of Public Health in Ostrava, ČSN ISO 21702:2021. For the tested SARS-CoV-2 virus strain, effectiveness of more than 99 % was confirmed.
  • Antibacterial effectiveness — Textile Testing Institute in Brno, ČSN ISO 22196:2011. For Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, effectiveness of 99.9 % was confirmed.
  • Human skin irritation — National Institute of Public Health in Prague, ISO 10993-23:2021. The film showed no irritant effect on human skin.

Maintenance and replacement

The self-cleaning film acts continuously against micro-organisms, but it does not replace the mechanical removal of visible soiling such as dust, drink spills or stains. For routine maintenance we recommend a microfibre cloth with water or disinfectant, or disinfectant wipes.

For optimum hygienic protection we recommend replacing the film after approximately 3–5 months, depending on the specific operating conditions.

Where it is used

LOTUS Foil is particularly suitable for equipment touched by large numbers of different users.

  • queue management systems
  • self-service checkouts
  • vending machines
  • ATMs
  • information and wayfinding panels
  • check-in kiosks
  • tablets

Further benefits

  • high stability
  • easier maintenance
  • fully recyclable
  • developed and manufactured in the Czech Republic

A photoactive surface treatment complements a standard hygiene regime. It does not replace regular cleaning and disinfection.

VEROPAL® Stainless Protect S

User information and instructions for use

Description

VEROPAL® Stainless Protect S is a two-component transparent epoxy coating containing a photoactive phthalocyanine derivative, intended for professional application. It is designed primarily for the protective coating of stainless steel door handles, hand rails, railings, grips, control elements and other metal surfaces that are frequently touched.

Once cured it forms a continuous layer with high mechanical and chemical resistance. Depending on the concentration and type of phthalocyanine used, the transparent layer may have a blue, blue-green or green-blue tint.

The coating contains no heavy metals.

How it works

The photoactive component absorbs visible light, mainly in the 600–700 nm wavelength range. When light strikes the surface, energy is transferred to the oxygen present in the air and reactive oxygen species are formed, primarily singlet oxygen. These reactive species act only briefly and in the immediate vicinity of the surface, helping to break down organic soiling and limit microbial contamination.

The active effect depends mainly on:

  • sufficient light intensity and a suitable spectral composition
  • access to atmospheric oxygen
  • cleanliness of the treated surface
  • duration of light exposure
  • the amount and nature of surface contamination

Where it is used

  • door and window handles
  • hand rails and railings
  • grips and control elements
  • stainless steel parts of hospital and laboratory equipment
  • touch surfaces in public buildings
  • stainless steel covers and structural elements

Application and substrate

The product is intended for professional industrial application; the recommended method is HVLP spraying in one or two coats. The coating can be applied in particular to ground and brushed stainless steel, primarily grade AISI 304.

On highly polished, electro-polished, blasted, passivated or PVD-coated surfaces, adhesion, wetting and the resulting appearance of the coating must be verified in advance. Always carry out a test coating before series application.

Maintenance of the treated surface

Clean the treated surface with a soft cloth or a non-abrasive sponge. The compatibility of any cleaning and disinfecting agents used must be verified on a fully cured coating.

Do not use:

  • abrasive cleaning powders
  • steel wool and abrasive sponges
  • hard brushes
  • agents that cause the epoxy film to swell or etch

Limitations of use

Under prolonged exposure to UV radiation or intense sunlight, epoxy coatings may gradually yellow, chalk or change appearance. The product is therefore primarily intended for indoor applications.

The photoactive effect depends on lighting. In dark spaces, or where the intensity of suitable light is insufficient, the photoactive mechanism will not take place to the declared extent.

The coating does not replace regular cleaning and disinfection. Without appropriate assessment, the product is not intended for direct contact with food or drinking water, for surfaces permanently immersed in water, or for surfaces in prolonged contact with skin.

Manufacturer

SYNPO, akciová společnost, S. K. Neumanna 1316, 532 07 Pardubice — Zelené Předměstí, Czech Republic. A company with a quality management system certified to ISO 9001. Technical data sheet issued 4/2023.

A photoactive surface treatment complements a standard hygiene regime. It does not replace regular cleaning and disinfection.

FreshDye P

User information and instructions for use

Description

FreshDye P technology protects against the deposition of organic and microbial pollutants through the synergistic effect of a commercial biocide and a photoactive organic dye. This significantly limits the transfer of dangerous micro-organisms between the patient and nursing staff.

The system is intended for indoor applications and is activated both by daylight and by LED light sources. The photocatalytic system can be applied by a standard industrial dyeing process to cotton and blended fabrics.

Composition and principle

The antimicrobial agent is the commercial, metal-free biocide SANITIZED T99-19, approved and authorised for textile treatment in the Czech Republic, applied at a reduced dose (1/10 of the standard amount).

The performance of this biocide is significantly increased by the photoactive colorant, which also gives the fabric its shade. The presence of the colorant also considerably extends the stability of the antimicrobial effect through repeated laundering.

Material composition (FreshDye P sheets)

Cotton/lycra 94/6 — combed cotton 16.5 tex, lycra 22 dtex, 200 g/m².

Skin safety

Textile material treated with FreshDye P may be in direct contact with the skin and is not a significant skin irritant. Confirmed by test SOP 10/10, in vivo human irritation testing according to ČSN EN ISO 10993-23:2021, carried out by the National Institute of Public Health in Prague.
